Question

Posted on: March 6 2013

Following preparation does not succeed: Beta Naphthol 4 G Resorcine 4 G salicylic acid Ethanol Q.S. Collodion elasticum AD 50 g

Using 10 mL of disinfectant alcohol and collodion Z.A.N. for 50 g we get a too viscous clear paste. How can this be solved?

Answer

Presumably one or other interaction with the nitrocellulose occurs. I think it is most appropriate here to increase the amount of alcohol. I suspect that all solids are soluble in alcohol. For example, take 20 g of alcohol and dissolve all medicines. Gradually add collodion to this solution. Check how viscous the whole becomes. If this Is the case, the amount of alcohol can still be increased.

Comment (because of the questioner)
when the solution of the three solids in alcohol, collodion was attached, regardless of the amount of collodion, again that fixed viscous mass was formed. But replacing the alcohol by acetone solved the problem. We used 10 g of acetone and the solution was clear, with a normal viscosity.
