In which cases should lidocaine HCl be replaced by lidocaine base?

In the preparation of oral preparations, lidocaine HCl is often used, but in some cases this gives load interactions with, for example, Viscosite boosters. Can we also work with lidocaine base or does it have other properties than the HCl?

Answer

Using lidocaine base gives a problem for water solubility. It will have to be suspended.

But as a major exception, Lidocaine HCl appears to be compatible with anionic polymers such as CMC-making a replacement in most cases redundant.
