Is it possible to make an officinal preparation of Zinolium (ZnSO4-gel)?

According to the preparation method of the book Carbomeren, Triethanolamine should be used for the neutralization of the Carbopol. However, we have replaced TEA with Trometamol. (Formula: 1.78 g ZnSO 4.7 Aqua, 2g carbopol 980, 50mg Na-EDTA, 15g propylene glycol, 4.058 g trometamol, ad 100g Aqua Conservans).
The problem occurs every time you add the dissolved zinc sulfate to the Carbomeergel or we now prepare it yourself or use a pre-fabricate (composition TMF). Water enters the gel.
lies the problem then in the incompatibility of the zinc sulfate with Carbopol or does it come by the replacement of Triethanolamine by Trometamol? We prefer a compound based on Carbopol above this from the NF with methyl cellulose.

Answer

I suspect that both the replacement of TEA by Trometamol and the incompatibility of Zn 2 + with Carbomer (-) are at the root of your problem. The strength of the base will play an important role here as the base should not only be used in the neutralisation of the Carbomer but also in the conversion of ZnSo4 to ZnO or Zn (OH) 2. So best is to use TEA as stated in the composition of Zinolium. Only one needs to determine the correct amount of base to be added experimentally. No house preparation without a small effort!
