Is there a formula to prepare ibuprofen suppositories and are these stable?

A child of 2 years wants to stop taking the Junifen syrup. Possibly also a syrup instead of Junifen but with a better taste.

Answer

I found it a bit suspicious that ibuprofen (Brufen) suppositories occur in so few countries. The next article will give us some peace of mind about possible side effects. However, on the basis of this article, we certainly cannot conclude that there are no side effects, especially when the medicine is used for a long period in contrast to the shorter period of the study below. It is not ruled out that local irritation occurs as well as upset stomach. Therefore, the attending physician must be notified!

Ibuprofen in the treatment of postoperative pain in small children. Kokki, H and Nuutinen, L.:   Acta Anaesthesiol Scand 1994, (38), 5, 467-472

The efficacy of ibuprofen as a pre-emptive analgesic for postoperative pain was investigated in 81 children in The age between one and four years subjected to elective surgery. The patients were randomized into two groups receiving rectally either ibuprofen 40 mg.kg-1. D-1, divided into four equal doses, or placebo in a double blind manner. Additional pain relief was provided by morphine. In The recovery room ibuprofen provided superior pain relief during the first hour and significantly reduced the need of morphine. Heart rate and arterial blood pressure were lower in children who received ibuprofen, probably reflecting better analgesia. The side effects were mild and similar in both groups. We conclude that rectal ibuprofen is a safe analgesic in children in the age between 1 and 4 years and reduces the need of opioids for postoperative pain relief.

I suspect that the preparation of the suppositories can happen in the classical way although possibly melting point reduction might occur. This will clarify the experiment. Information about melting point reduction at suppositories is also available on the website. I think that in terms of stability, it can be counted over a period of 2 months.

As regards the preparation of a well-tasting syrup, I must tell you that this is not an easy task. Everything depends heavily on the taste of the child. On the question box, under bitter taste (use search function) You can find something that could "help".
